The Dinosaur Principle – Failure Culture

Growth doesn't come from getting it right the first time.

The Dinosaur Principle is my original framework for navigating risk, failure, and growth – without the shame. It helps teams and entrepreneurs name what phase they’re in, normalize setbacks, and build resilience over time. It’s not about avoiding discomfort, it’s about using it as data.

How does your company deal with failure? Can your team talk openly about what went wrong – or does silence dominate the room?

Facing failure often feels like staring into the jaws of something ancient, scary, and threatening. But what if that dinosaur could actually teach us something about how to grow?

It’s not about avoiding discomfort – it’s about using it as data.

What Is the Dinosaur Principle?

A framework for navigating risk, failure, and growth – without the shame.

The Dinosaur Principle is my original framework for dealing with failure in a constructive and human way. It helps teams and entrepreneurs:

  • Identify what phase of failure they’re in,

  • Normalize setbacks instead of hiding them,

  • Build long-term resilience.

This principle has helped clients across industries create more honest, adaptive work environments. It’s also been featured in the academic book Psychology of Entrepreneurship (Springer Verlag), where I contributed a full chapter.

Illustration of "The Dinosaur Principle" by Andreia Fernandes showing a stylized black line forming a dinosaur shape across three phases. The line begins with a downward curve (Phase 1), loops upward and downward (Phase 2), and rises into a head with an eye and zigzag mouth (Phase 3), symbolizing the emotional and developmental journey through failure. The Three Phases of the Dinosaur Principle

  1. Acknowledge the Fall – Name the failure clearly, without shame.

  2. Analyze with Curiosity –  Explore what happened, without blame. Ask: What are we learning?

  3. Act with Intention – Apply what you’ve learned. Share your insights. Adjust strategy and move forward.

This cycle works at the individual, team, and organizational levels.

What Happens When We Ignore Failure?

The real danger is not failure – it’s pretending it didn’t happen.

  • Innovation stalls

  • People hide problems

  • Feedback loops break

  • Trust suffers

The good news? A healthy failure culture changes everything.

When people feel safe to name what’s not working, everything moves faster: ideas improve, alignment grows, and transformation becomes possible.

Want to Dive Deeper?

The Dinosaur Principle isn’t just a metaphor – it’s a mindset shift. One that moves us from fear to learning, from paralysis to progress. And it works. I’ve seen it in boardrooms, in startup teams, and in 1:1 coaching sessions. Again and again, the simple act of naming what’s hard becomes the doorway to what’s next.

The book lies on a gray concrete surface and includes the Springer logo and an 'EBOOK INSIDE' label. Andreia Fernandes, keynote speaker and expert on leadership and failure culture, contributed a full chapter to this book, introducing her original framework 'The Dinosaur Principle' – a practical methodology for navigating failure and fostering resilience in entrepreneurial and team contexts
